解説：
南米で多様化している科。アンデスでは特に標高3,000m以上の地域に生息している種も多くいます。Orobothriurus huascaranはペルーの標高4,910m地点での生息が確認され、これが高山地域に生息するサソリの世界記録とされています。石の下や割れ目に隠れている種のほか、地中に最大40cmの巣穴を掘る種がいます。
これまで、形態学的解析では、コガネサソリ科 (Scorpionidae)・ヤセサソリ科 (Hormuridae)・フタトゲサソリ科 (Diplocentridae) などと近縁であると考えられてきましたが、近年のゲノム系統解析では、比較的原始的な分類群であるという結果が出ています。
