解説：
体長が8～18mmと非常に小さく、マダガスカルにのみ分布するMicrocharmusとNeoprotobuthusの2属からなる分類群です。元々はキョクトウサソリ科に分類されていましたが、1996年に亜科 (Microcharminae) として提唱され、1998年に独立した科への格上げが提唱されました。
ヒメサソリ科のサソリは、形態的な類似点が多いことから、キョクトウサソリ科 (Buthidae) と近縁とされ、系統解析研究では独立した科とするのは難しいという主張もあり、分類学的な位置づけははっきりしていません。
