ヨーロッパ中南部、アフリカ (地中海沿岸)、西アジア、メキシコ、中米、南米
解説：
温暖な森林内の倒木下に生息しているとされます。一方、洞窟内に生息している種もいます。外来種として分布範囲外の地域で発見されることもあるそうで、ヨーロピアンイエロースコーピオン (Tetratrichobothrius flavicaudis) は外来種としてイギリス (イングランド南部) での定着が知られ、分布の拡大が心配されています。
現在ではオニサソリ科 (Scorpiopidae) を本科に含める分類もあります。
