解説：
幅広い地域に分布することで知られている分類群で、北アメリカを除くすべての大陸の熱帯・亜熱帯域に生息しています。また、高山地域に生息している種もいます。日本の先島諸島にも分布するヤエヤマサソリは、東南アジアやオセアニアの熱帯域に広く分布していることでも知られています。
これまでに、同じ科でありながら「Ischnuridae」「Liochelidae」「Hormuridae」と科の学名だけを変更するという提唱がされている少し特殊な??事情をもつ科でもあります。
